What Is the Secular Social?

It is a casual online social gathering for guys who are secular, atheist, agnostic, humanist, nonreligious, de-converting or deconstructing in a supportive environment. It is not a lecture, a meeting, or a debate about religion. The purpose is much simpler: good conversations, new friends, and online connections.

You join to meet other guys, talk, laugh, and get to know people you might not otherwise encounter. A secular social space can include people with different backgrounds, experiences, interests, and perspectives.

What brings us together is an opportunity to socialize in an environment where being nonreligious does not require an explanation. The emphasis is on open minds, kindness, community, and dialogue rather than debate.

There is also value in meeting people outside your existing social circles. Someone you meet at the Secular Social might share your interest in music, books, sports, movies, science, travel, fitness, technology, psychology, or dozens of other subjects. Secularism may bring people into the same virtual room, but it does not have to dominate the conversation.

You can talk when you have something to contribute, listen when someone else has something interesting to say, ask questions, tell a story, share an experience, or simply become more comfortable with the group.

More Than a Discussion About Secularism

Although this is a secular gathering, the goal is not to spend the entire event discussing religion or nonreligion. Secular people are not defined solely by what they do or do not believe about gods. We have careers, hobbies, favorite books, favorite bands, places we want to visit, teams we follow, things that make us laugh, experiences worth sharing, and questions we enjoy discussing. The Secular Social provides a space for those ordinary human connections.

That distinction matters. There are plenty of opportunities online to argue about ideas. There are fewer spaces intentionally created for people to talk to one another as people.

Building Secular Community

If we want stronger secular communities, we need more than organizations, articles, conferences, and discussions about secularism. We also need friendships and social relationships.

That means creating opportunities where people can simply enjoy one another's company.

A successful secular community should be a place where someone can say, "These are people I enjoy talking to. I look forward to seeing them again."

That is what the Secular Social is intended to help create.

Give It a Try

You do not have to make a major commitment. You do not have to promise to attend every event. You do not even have to know exactly what you are looking for. Just show up with an open mind and a willingness to have a conversation.

You might have an interesting discussion. You might laugh more than you expected. You might discover that you have something in common with someone you would never have met otherwise.

Good conversations. New friends. Meaningful connections.

That is what the Secular Social Virtual Hangout is about.
